EXCELSIOR DRUM and BUGLE CORPS
~ A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION ~

Best Practices
"What's expected of our Members"

Notice: This document is preliminary and subject to change without notice.

REHEARSAL

  1. All members are accountable for being at all rehearsals, parades and performances. If we do not have participation from all members, then we will never achieve our goals.  If unforeseen circumstances arise, and as a result you may be tardy or absent, please contact your section leader or caption head with the details.  For school age members, please be advised that Excelsior is an “Education First Organization” as well as a “Band Friendly Corps”.  Please refer to the member handbook for complete explanations.  But, in short, school functions necessary for completion of course studies and school band function are usually deemed acceptable reasons for absences from Excelsior functions.  Please communicate with your section leaders and caption heads as soon as you may know of any conflicts.

  2. All members are accountable for being "on-time" to all aforementioned corps functions.  A good rule of thumb is; "If you are not 15 minutes early, then you are late".  Excelsior will have a voluntary “penalty box”.  If you are late to a scheduled rehearsal, you are asked to pay $1 to the “penalty box”, and all “penalty box” funds will be used towards awards and future member benefits as deemed appropriate by corps management.

  3. All members will be held accountable in bringing certain items with them to practice.  Items such as:

    Brass:

    • Horn (we ask that you provide your own mouthpiece)
    • Personally owned horns must be approved by brass staff.
    • A 3 ring binder with plastic insert sleeves (music will be provided to fill the binder)
    • Writing utensils (we recommend 3 pencils
    • Practice gloves (to be purchased by the member)
    • Valve oil (to be purchased by the member)
    • A folding music stand (to be purchased by the member)
(optional) a tape recorder to record the music

             Percussion

    • Equipment provided by the corps
    • Sticks (staff will advise on type of sticks and mallets)
    • A 3 ring binder with plastic insert sleeves (music will be provided to fill the binder)
    • Writing utensils (we recommend 3 pencils)
    • A folding music stand (to be purchased by the member)

             Guard

    • Most equipment provided by the corps
    • A staff member will advise what additional items may be required.
  4. Above all else, a positive attitude should be worn on everyone sleeve.  A positive attitude is the most contagious "condition" in a drum corps.  A positive attitude can be the difference between good and great.  Our hope is that with a positive attitude we can all have a great drum corps experience that will last a lifetime.

PERFORMANCE
(Draft)

  1. All members are expected to be at all exhibitions, parades and performances. If we do not have participation from all members, then we will never achieve our goals.  If unforeseen circumstances arise, and as a result you may be tardy or absent, please contact your section leader or caption head with the details.  For school age members, please refer to the “Education First Organization” and “Band Friendly Corps” sections of the member handbook for instructions for academically required absences.

  2. Transportation to all performances will be detailed within the performance outlines and will be communicated to members well in advance of any performance by the corps management and/or a representative of the Administrative Board.

  3. All members will be held accountable for bringing certain items with them to a performance.  Items such as:

Uniform:

  • Uniform, to include acceptable under garments (all under garments are to be white in color, with no print, unless otherwise specified), gloves, hats, (shako and plume), shoes and socks, gauntlets (if applicable), and any uniform accessory necessary for a themed show.  A complete uniform is the responsibility of the member.  In such time as an equipment truck or trailer is used to transport uniforms to and/or from a performance venue, then Excelsior will assume the responsibility for each members uniform jacket, pants, and hats (shako and plume).

Equipment:

  • Any personally owned equipment that is approved for use by the corps management and/or a representative of the Administrative Board, shall be the responsibility of the member to bring to each performance.

  • Equipment owned by Excelsior will be transported to each performance by a corps designated vehicle.  Brass members will be responsible for their mouthpiece.  Drummers will be responsible for their sticks or mallets.

  • On occasion, members may be required to transport equipment that would otherwise be transported by the corps.  In such cases, the safety and security of that equipment will be the responsibility of the member.

Good Performance Etiquette:

  •  It is the responsibility of each member to represent Excelsior in the highest regard possible.  As a member of this organization you represent, not only the organization, but all the members, staff, and volunteers who march with you, instruct and teach you and who have come before and will come after you.  Whether in uniform or not, you will forever be defined as a member of Excelsior, and that should always be how you project yourself.

  •  It is important to be where you need to be when you need to be there and be ready to warm-up, dress, travel, muster, meet and/or perform when the time comes.  Excelsior depends on each member to be responsible for themselves and to understand that everyone else is counting on you.
